You Slut! drummer Daz Cook reveals the secrets of being in a math rock band

Drummer from former math rock band You Slut! Daz Cook has been sharing his book How To Be In A Band Your Parents Will Hate: A Guide To Math Rock chapter by chapter over on Fecking Bahamas. Currently up to chapter six wisdom has been humorously imparted on what math rock is, writing songs, naming your band, getting your first gigs and explaining to work colleagues what your music is like.

The guide draws on Cook’s own experience with Derby band You Slut!, including thinking carefully before naming your band You Slut!, who were together for a decade before splitting in 2014 (although they did briefly reform in 2016 according to their Facebook page). They were signed to Derby label Stressed Sumo Records (run by Phil Rhodes and Neil Cooper of Therapy? – and previously of Cable), toured Europe and were described by now defunct Big Cheese magazine as “Eschewing post-rock and instrumental trends to replicate Mogwai…they’ve got the angularity of At the Drive-in and the playfulness of Dartz!

Publishing the first chapter at the start of December Cook has explained what math rock is working through to the latest chapter on explaining that’s the music you play to colleagues who’s diverse music taste stretches from ‘“The Killers through to Kings of Leon”’. Straddling the line between derision and love familiar to anyone who’s been in a band, the subject of the book is worn on the surface with a weary air but the excited wonder of making music with your friends bubbling just beneath. It evokes the effort behind creativity, holds the ridiculous and the fun of it up for all to see.

As much a knowing in-joke between musicians in wide-of-mainstream bands as it is a guide aspiring artists could plot a course by there are moments of close-to-the-bone yet smirk-raising observation among the practical tips. There are moments of bitterness, a sense that the musician exists despite of the day-to-day life and the 9-5 grind rather than as part of it; the artist here is positioned as other. The positioning is interesting given the books practical, if humorously delivered, theme.

Not quite a memoir of the You Slut! years, but certainly a light read one for anyone who’s been in a band, wants to be in a band, has had a colleague reveal they’re in a band, or wondered what the hell math rock is anyway.

Find part one of the book on Fecking Bahamas. Keep an eye on the site or the You Slut! Facebook page for further chapters.
