Pet Crow – A Simple Guide to Small and Medium Pond Life

Coming up to their one year anniversary as a band Pet Crow has firmly stamped out a place as one of Derby’s most sought after bands. Having already released the four track EP Pet Soundz back in April 2016, and being snapped up by one of the UK’s fastest growing independent record labels Reckless Yes, their debut full length LP has been highly anticipated by many.

With the four tracks from Pet Soundz re-appearing here on the full length LP the expectation is that this will be more of an extension of what we have already fallen in love with. First track Harold and Maude certainly does not let us down. With reverb drenched guitar alongside blasts of pure garage punk riffs show a clear influence from the likes of Bratmobile and Slutever.

As the record progresses you can tell that Pet Crow are already comfortable with their own sound and brimming with confidence. However, this is also a band with more than one trick up their sleeves. Tracks such as Pressure Sores, Bazwatch and Let Your Hair Down are straight up garage rock/ riot grrrl anthems. Where as songs such as Shake It Out add a bass and drum driven groove to show a more The Julie Ruin-esq. danceable side to the band.

Absorbed brings the whole album to a near perfect close as Danielle Cotterill’s haunting vocals float over the driven lo-fi guitar and angsty backing vocals. After a brief calm the song finishes with a crashing climax that afterwards has you feeling that you have reached the end of the roller coaster but then has you simply begging for another go round.

With the quality of this record being a representation of where this band are after only a year, then I for one am already eagerly awaiting future offerings from Pet Crow.

A Simple Guide to Small and Medium Pond Life is released digitally today as pay what you like on Bandcamp and on limited coloured vinyl by the fast growing Derby label Reckless Yes Records on 24 February 2017. You can pre-order a copy here.
