New night, She Speaks, launches this week in Derby aiming to support female spoken word artists and musicians.
The first night takes place at Derby’s Victoria Inn on Thursday 15 June 2017 and will be headlined by Milla Tebbs and Sophie Sparham and will also feature Rosa Straw, Shub Haywood, Pippa Nayer, Emerciana Desouza, Jo Lewis, and Aoife O’Connor. There will also be an open mic element to the night when male performers are welcome to take the stage.
Headliners Milla Tebbs and Sophie Sparham both have Derby connections with the latter performing, living and working in the city – occasionally writing for this and other cultures sites as well as penning novels.
Writing on the network’s Facebook page co-organiser Aoife wrote about their reasons for setting up the night: “Even though “the arts” are the most liberal and loving place to be, it can still be very male dominated and within the up and coming poetry and performance scene in Derby we have noticed this.
“We want to create a night for all which shows support and love for the women in the arts and we’re having a night (hopefully regularly) that promotes this. We’re putting together an event that has a collection of inspirational and incredible performers headlined by women that we think are starting to or are paving the way and prove that anyone can do it no matter what.”
The network uses the slogan ‘Art Is Our Liberation’, a powerful statement and powerful intent to address a gender imbalance in and upcoming scene. Spoken word has a growing following in the city with poet Jamie Thrasivoulou recently telling Storge he felt it was the new rock n roll.
The event on Thursday begins at 8pm and has a suggested donation on the door of £3 but stresses no one will be turned away for lack of funds. More details on the event can be found on Facbeook.
