Panji and The Buffalo, the solo project of You Slut! drummer Daz Cook, has become the latest band to sign to Derby-based record label Reckless Yes Records and has announced a debut EP.
The Rare Moves EP will be released this summer through the label, following a successful crowdfunding campaign toward recording costs.
Describing the EP Peter Darrington of Reckless Yes said, “What’s particularly enchanting about his latest project though is I was bowled over by just how creative and talented a composer Mr Cook is. Every single instrument on this record – drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, stuffed raccoon – Daz has played the lot and in doing so, he’s created a math rock landscape that’s the sonic equivalent of an MC Escher drawing – every time you listen to it, new patterns and rhythms emerge that take you off in a different direction and then cleverly lead you back to where you started. It’s just superb!”
Recorded at Derby’s Snug Recording Company with former You Slut! bandmate Rich Collins engineering and mastering, an announcement on the release date and formats for the EP is expected soon. Of the news Cook, who is also the author of How To Be In A Band Your Parents Will Hate: A Guide To Math Rock, said he was ‘over the moon’ to be working with the label. He joins a roster already strong with local bands including Pet Crow, Unqualified Nurse Band, Grawl!x and Dactylion.
The EP is the first solo work from Cook, who was drummer in metal-influenced math rock band You Slut!. The band formed in 2004 and released records with Neil Cooper (Cable, Gorilla, Therapy?) and Phil Rhodes run label Stressed Sumo. The band split up in 2014, reforming briefly in 2016 and is now on indefinite hiatus.
