Derby Theatre’s Departure Lounge Festival has got underway in the city and is set to continue through the weekend with shows, workshops and a family fun day.
Now celebrating its fifth year the festival, a hub for innovative and fresh performance, runs until Sunday 23 July with previews of Edinburgh Festival shows as well as other performances. Departure Lounge is the flagship festival of In Good Company, a partnership between Derby Theatre, Burton Brewhouse, Attenborough Arts Centre, Mansfield Old Library and Lincolnshire One Venues to develop artists, provide opportunity and support exciting new performance.
The Festival began yesterday (20 July) with the East Meets West Symposium, a workshop and conference event hosted by Little Earthquakes and intended to reduce the barriers and encourage collaboration between and within the East and West Midlands’ independent theatre-making communities. It was the second half of a two-day event with the first part held at mac Birmingham on 19 July.
Departure Lounge will be followed next weekend (27-29 July) by Arrivals, a celebration of new writing and young voices. This extension of the festival will include a performance of The Blue Road by Laura Lomas, performed by Derby Youth Theatre and workshops on writing and performance.
