SubVERSE: New hip hop and spoken word night launches

SubVERSE logoA new monthly night is set to launch in Derby for conscious hip hop and spoken word when SubVERSE gets underway on 14 September 2017.

The first event takes place on 14 September 2017 and features ‘open mic cypher over the dopest hip hop beats’ but will also feature local poets and hip hop artists Ili Sanchea, Sophie Sparham, Jamie Thrasivoulou, Simon Praxis Jones, Manny Marko, Dan Dappa, and Jnr Natty. More details of the event are here.

The latest night on a growing spoken word circuit – with Word Wise marking its first birthday, and She Speaks getting ready for their second night this month too – SubVERSE will be held at Ryan’s Bar off St Peter’s Street and is curated by Mana Records.

She Speaks, a female-led spoken word event, will take place at the Victoria Inn on 17 September and is set to be headlined by Leanne Moden and Nafeesa Hamid, with Kaia Hristova, Ali Brumfitt, Emerciana Desouza, Jo Lewis and Aoife O’Connor also performing. More details on the event are available here.

Word Wise, hosted by Derby’s unofficial poet laureate Jamie Thrasivoulou, will mark its first birthday on 29 September when it takes place at The Maypole. Performances this time from Maria Ferguson, Peter Bearder (Pete The Temp), Casey Bailey, and Aoife O’Connor. More details are available here.

With an ever-growing local scene and poets of national importance based in the city it seems the time is ripe for Derby to host a poetry festival and plans are set to be announced soon on the first of these.
