Tonight Derby four-piece garage pop band Pet Crow will support ska-punks Lightyear on the first date of their 20th Anniversary tour when they play the Hairy Dog. The date was a bonus addition to the tour when initial hometown date – set for Friday 20 October – sold out.
It comes in a busy year for Pet Crow, who only formed in early 2016 but have put out debut album A Simple Guide To Small And Medium Pond Life as well as a double A single this year, toured the UK playing with the likes of Menace Beach and at both Dot to Dot and Hockley Hustle in Nottingham, as well as getting shortlisted for the alternative Mercury – the Her’cury Music Award.
Their path mirrors Unqualified Nurse Band in many ways – both have released albums with Derby-based label Reckless Yes and then gone on to have charting singles with Too Pure Singles Club, with Pet Crow reaching number 58 in the Physical Singles Chart and getting played on 6Music as well as national music press coverage.
Pet Crow – Pressure Sores
Taken from debut album A Simple Guide To Small And Medium Pond Life, Pressure Sores was released in February 2017 on Reckless Yes. The track was recorded at Snug and the video was shot by Lara Elliott and James Machin (Grawl!x), including scenes shot in Derby Cathedral and Derby QUAD.
Reviewing the track the National Student said, “Pressure Sores is a feminist anthem in the best riot grrl tradition, channelling the power of ’60s garage punk past and bolting on elements of psychobilly and post-punk funky percussion. The track is a straight-up middle finger to the established order and societal expectations, especially for women at the thin end of the patriarchal wedge.”
There are still a few tickets on the door for the Lightyear gig tonight at the Hairy Dog so get down early and catch Pet Crow as well as other support act Vanilla Pod. More details here.
