After being mentioned in our Ones To Watch 2018 Sex Jokes, the new project from Mighty Kids‘ Shelley Jane Newman, has shared a first demo track, Talk, online.
Having announced the project last year and gathering a following on Facebook Newman has spent time on writing and demoing songs with this track the first hint of how Sex Jokes will sound.
With warm guitar and shimmering vocals in Talk there is a touch of Rilo Kiley in the sound and the sentiments, echoes of other US indie rock and pop punk abound – think Upset and Chastity Belt. Over this side of the pond if we need to find comparisons the pop of Dream Wife and the straight-talk of Dream Nails would both sit happily alongside this track.
However the sound shapes up for the full release – an EP is expected in spring – what’s certain is this female-led pop punk sound is lacking on the Derby scene at the moment and Sex Jokes fills that space perfectly, even at this early stage of development. We’re certainly looking forward to hearing more tracks here at Storge – as well as the finished release in due course.
This is the first to be shared of several planned projects from Newman this year – she’s also playing with God No! alongside Pete Darrington (Cable, SeiSui, Heavy Pets), and Ash Mullen-West (Alright The Captain, Mender) as well as working on new material with Mighty Kids, and solo gigs under the moniker Shelley From Finance.
