Derby grime artist Eyez has released his debut single Init and with it is further showing that the genre should no longer be considered the preserve of the capital, but is healthily pushing forward from the provinces.
The emcee has been pretty busy over the last year but is hitting 2018 at a pace with the release of this debut single ahead of an EP next month. It follows on from collaborations with artists including Maniac, Scrufizzer and Mez but rightly sees him taking centre stage on this solo release, produced with Zdot and Krunchie.
Well known as one of the best lyricists and freestylers on the scene Init showcases the mastery of words, of punctuated and blunt imagery, in his flows.
‘I don’t wanna be the same, I don’t wanna be like everybody else, I’m myself, I don’t gotta make a change’.
With sinister punctuated strings buzzing behind the beat and the flow about where he’s come from and where he wants to go. Not for Eyez the fame and fortune, but the escape from the streets on which he grew up, with a solid name-check for his hometown Derby. There might be a sneer toward this place, and toward the grime scene, but there’s an affection too in the bars; that he is who is he, and who he is going to be, in spite of the place but because of it too.
Emcee’ing since the age of 11 and increasingly making waves on the scene – his video F**k The Grime Scene has racked up well over 1million views on YouTube and he’s led a Derby team to victory in the Grime A-Side tournament – this single is a strong opener from what is bound to be a blistering EP.
Eyez Init is out on Spotify and iTunes now. EP Square 1 is due out in February 2018.
