Paracinema Weekend 2018 – Programme Highlights
Toyah Willcox In Conversation – 5pm, Saturday 5 May 2018
When we were looking at potential guests for the first Paracinema, we were looking for someone whose career embodies the eclectic nature of Paracinema. Toyah fits the bill to a T. From her roles in Derek Jarman movies; working alongside Lawrence Olivier; appearing in Quadrophenia and more recently in Steve Oram’s Aaaaaaahhh! Toyah’s acting career has shown her range. And that is before we even get to her pop career!
Attack Of The Adult Babies – 7.45pm, Friday 4 May 2018
Again, when we were looking for flagship titles that embody the ethos of Paracinema, we were keen on getting Attack Of The Adult Babies. Horror, Comedy, Thriller….all of the above blended together. Director Dominic Brunt (Paddy in Emmerdale) has stepped outside the box for this brilliant film. Dominic and actress Joanne Mitchell will be appearing at the festival to talk about the making of the film with fellow film director Jake West (Doghouse).
Introduction To Pink Cinema + rare 35mm screening of The Glamorous Life Of Sachiko Hanai – 1pm, Sunday 6 May 2018
Paracinema is all about exploring the fringes of cinema, playing in the side streets and alleyway less frequented. To highlight this we have brought Japanese Film expert Jasper Sharp to the festival to talk about the uniquely Japanese genre of Pink Cinema. Pink Cinema is a combination of the steamy, the subversive and the strange that gave many notable Japanese directors their break in the industry. The Glamorous Life Of Sachiko Hanai is the tale of a call girl who shot in the head after an altercation between two men in a café. This injury gives her extra-sensory perception, an increased sex drive, the ability to understand all languages, advanced mathematical knowledge and the cloned finger of George W Bush….it’s bonkers!
Ouijageist – World Premiere + Screenwriters Q&A – 2pm, Monday 7 May 2018
We’re delighted to be showcasing local screenwriters at Paracinema with the world premiere of this film written by Steve Hardy and Paracinema advisor Darrell Buxton. A young single mum adds to her real world woes with some supernatural ones when she and her friends dabble with a Ouija board.

Images Of Apartheid – World Premiere + Director Q&A – 5.45pm, Friday 7 May 2018
This historical documentary explores the weird and wonderful, and largely unknown period of South African B-Movies. Made under the apartheid regime this movement spawned gangster thrillers, home invasion horrors, spaghetti westerns and more. A eye opening window on a world of cinema. Director Calum Waddell will be joining us to talk about the period and how he came to make a film about it!
