If you’re looking for a soundtrack to your Halloween hexing and hi-jinks then DJ Format has you covered with this new mix released just ahead of his gig in Derby next month with Abdominal.
The pair will play The Venue on 14 November and the new Halloween mix is full of DJ Format‘s typically diverse selection from soul, funk, hip hop and rock but all with a suitably spooky feel.
Hailing from Southampton DJ Format had one of the most successful debut album’s from an urban artist with the release of 2003’s Music For The Mature B-Boy. With critical acclaim it was through word of mouth that the album spread, marking it as one of the early successes of the post-internet music scene too, with now iconic music videos playing a key part. These were directed by a Reuben Fleischer who has gone on to direct films Zombieland and Venom as well as music videos for Electric Six and M.I.A.
As well as opening for DJ Shadow, and working with Jurassic 5 DJ Format is regularly joined by Canadian-born rapper Abdominal – his contributions one of the stand out parts of that acclaimed debut.
The pair teamed up again for most recent album Still Hungry, released earlier this year, and they’ll be playing Derby as part of the tour in support of the record. Full of their signature bouncing rhymes, scratches and samples the flow may be tempered by age and experience but has no less bite than earlier work, and schooling wannabes in flow and beats. With as many references to middle-aged life as there is social awareness this is one of the best releases this year across any genre with touchpoints from De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Michael Franti and beyond.
DJ Format and Abdominal play The Venue Derby with support from the In-Here Brothers on 14 November 2017. Tickets and more information available here.
